14 Days of Summer with some Cake

The past few weeks have been busy, as you can see, I have not blogged for a while.  In that time John and I have done a purse cake for a girls 16th birthday.  It was fun and somewhat challenging but it turned out great.  John worked with gum paste to make the tag, handle, zipper, rings, and studs for the purse. He did an amazing job!  I made the cakes, fondant, icings, and stacked and carved the purse shape out.  We are not professionals but we love creating and I love baking.  With our passion for creativity we work well together to make beautiful cakes.

I was collecting all the things I needed to make for this purse cake and could not find a tool to make the stitching effect on the fondant. John came up with a tool using a 4 inch long 1/4 inch dow, a piece of thin plastic, wire cutters and a drill.

How to Make the Stitch Wheel

1. He cut out a 2 inch circle
2. Cut tiny angled notches around the circle to create the stitch effect.
3. Drilled a 1/4 inch hole in the middle
4. Cut the dowel down to 4 inches and inserted it into the hole 1/2 way leaving a 2 inch handle on either side.
(The dowel went in tight so he did not need to glue anything)

Everything made with the Gum Paste shown except the handle and zipper

The Next picture shows the steps we took to make the cake. The cake ended up being about l: 13"x  h: 8.5"x  w: 5".

Here is the tiny change purse I did with the left over cake and fondant. I thought this would be a fun addition as the Birthday Girls Piece of Cake.  It was about 3"x4" in size.

  2. I am attaching a link to one of my favorite bloggers Jones Design, she actually put a tutorial up for Picasa. It is great and I love it, I use it for everything.
